Real Ghost Encounters: The White Shape on Moni Amavasya Night
This is one of the real ghost encounters of my own life, and it happened in 2013. It was a Friday. I was then learning the trade from a man named Mongal in our bazaar. On Friday afternoons all the shops in the bazaar were closed, the weekly holiday. That day I had gone to the bazaar because I did not feel like sitting at home, and at home there was no electricity then. I thought, the shop has electricity and an IPS, I could watch a movie or TV there and go home in the evening. No sooner thought than done. After lunch I set out around three or four in the afternoon.
I should mention here that three or four days earlier an elderly woman had died in our house. She was very old.
A Friday at the Shop
Reaching the bazaar, I wandered here and there and then came to the shop. I had the key, I opened the shop and put on some movie. After watching for half an hour to an hour I noticed that outside there was very heavy rain. My shop’s shutter was down, so I had not realised until then. I thought, let the rain ease, then I will leave. I had meant to leave in the evening, but the rain did not ease. Around eight or half past eight my IPS battery ran out and it shut off, so I went outside. I came out to find the kind of downpour you do not often see. There was no question of going anywhere. The whole bazaar was empty, because it was a Friday and also raining. One tea shop had been open, but they too had helplessly gone home.
Stranded by the Rain
I waited, thinking I would go home when the rain eased. As I waited it grew to nearly 12:41 at night, but the rain still did not ease. So what could I do? In our bazaar some rickshaw pullers do night duty. One of them was well known to me. I told him, take me and drop me in front of the house.
Let me explain the position of our house a little, or you will not understand. Around our house are big orchards, areca palms and bamboo groves. The house is in the middle. There are two ways into the house: one by the main road, the other through the bazaar. If I come through the bazaar, from the point where I enter, our house is no more than three minutes on foot. The rickshaw puller said, “Brother, instead of going by that path through the bazaar, I will go by another path.” He came by the other path and dropped me.
The Road Home
I had a phone in my hand, I do not remember its name, but it had a torch. A light drizzle was falling then. I paid the rickshaw puller and he left, and I began to walk on my own. On one side of the road was a canal, on the other an orchard, with some graveyards, and a little further a house. After crossing the graveyards I came in front of that house. Before you enter our house there is a three-way junction, and just beyond it is our home. About that three-way junction there has been a belief since childhood that many things happen there. I had never seen anything of the kind and did not believe much in it. As I walked I put a song on my phone.
Bhaiya, I do not know whether you will believe it, but I was crossing that three-way junction and entering the road to my house. From here the house is two or three minutes away, or less than a minute and a half if you walk fast. But I could not walk fast, because the road was unmade, muddy. So I walked slowly. Suddenly it came to my mind that two days ago someone had died in our house. This had not occurred to me before. At the same time another thing came to mind too, anyway, gathering some courage I thought, let me just go.

The White Shape
I quickened my pace. Suddenly I noticed that along with the rain there was faint lightning. In the light of that lightning I saw that about thirty cubits ahead of me something like polythene was just flying about. I thought, there is a light wind, so it is flying. Thinking it normal, I kept walking.
After going a little further I noticed that it was pouring heavily but there was no wind at all. And I could still see that thing in exactly the same place. I thought it might be a flask or something like that, because it could be seen only in the light of the lightning. I could not shine the torch that way, I did not dare, and the torch light did not reach that far anyway. I was amazed. I was amazed because in a heavy downpour, without wind, how could anything float in the air? That was impossible. After looking carefully for a while I understood that it was a woman, in white cloth, some shape of that kind. Bhaiya, when I understood this, it was drifting in front of me toward my house. I ran. In one dash I got right in front of the house, almost fainting.
What Happened on the Roof
At exactly that time a cousin of mine had gone up to the roof and was listening. It was not Friday that day, but that day some programme or recital was going on. He was standing beside the door when someone on the roof called out to him. His name is Rubel. Rubel apparently wanted to go forward and see who was calling him on the roof at that hour of night. Then someone slapped him so hard that he fell from the roof to the ground. Luckily another family member of ours was building something, there was sand piled by the roadside, and Rubel fell onto that sand. When I was nearly senseless, I saw something falling from above. Seeing that I was even more astonished. I could not move, I had gone completely frozen.
Later an older woman of the family came, saw the two of us and scolded us both. She said, “Why have you come out at this hour of night? Do you not know that today is amavasya, and Moni Amavasya?” In our Hindu religion Moni Amavasya is observed, and it is said to be the greatest of the new moons, lasting twenty-four hours. According to the Hindu faith this new moon is very dreadful. In truth this had not been in my head, but it was in the head of the woman who had died in our house. That is as much as my story.
