Real Haunted House Story: The Girls’ Mess in Joypurhat

November 6, 2026 Rasel

This is a true event from my own life, and it is a real haunted house story. I ask forgiveness in advance for any unintended mistakes in my writing. So let us begin.

A Mess Built Beside a Jungle

In 2016 I sat my SSC exams and was very happy, waiting to get into college. The results came out as usual. I live in a village, so for better studies I thought of getting admitted to a college in town. No sooner thought than done. I was admitted to a college in Joypurhat. Because the college was quite far from home, I moved into a mess. For the first time in my life I was away from my family. On one side I felt sad, on the other I was enjoying the freedom from a confined life.

Let me describe the mess first, so it is easier to follow. The mess was a six-storey building. Up to the fourth floor it was complete for girls to live in, and the fifth and sixth floors were unfinished. On one side of the roof were the kitchen and dining room. On the ground floor were two units, with girls living on one side and the mess owner on the other. The side next to the owner’s unit was inside a residential area, while the mess part was in a jungle-like place. So even in the daytime you could not see anything without switching on a light. I lived on the ground floor. There were seven rooms there, and the design of the rooms was strange. Five of the seven were on one side, and two on the opposite side. I lived in one of those two. My room had two beds, and my roommate had not yet come from home.

The Knocking at Two in the Morning

The first few days went quite well. The trouble came on the fifth day. As usual I was sleeping at night when the sound of a knock on the door woke me. I got up, opened the door and saw nobody. I closed it again and lay down. A few minutes later the same thing happened, I opened the door and saw nobody. I came out of the room into the veranda and looked, and there was nobody anywhere, everyone was asleep in their own rooms. A little annoyed, I closed the door, took my phone and saw that it was two o’clock. I thought someone was probably playing a prank, so this time even if they knocked I would not open. As I thought this, the room light went off, the electricity had gone. After waiting a while with no power, I went to sleep.

In the morning I woke to find the room still dark. Switching on my phone’s torch I went out and saw lights on in other rooms, but not in mine. I asked the mess owner to come and fix it, and he fixed it and left. After a while I saw two new girls arrive with their things, going to move into the room next to mine. They were my age, and I was happy, good, now there were two friends.

Everything was normal, everyone was sleeping. Suddenly in the middle of the night the sound of screaming and shouting woke me. I opened the door and went out to see what was wrong, and saw one of the two new girls crying, fear on her face. I asked, “What happened?” She said, “Quickly go to my room, my roommate is behaving strangely, I am afraid.” We all ran to her room and saw blood coming from her roommate’s nose and mouth, and a sound like groaning. We all poured water on her head and informed the mess owner. He came and took her to the hospital.

Later I heard the whole story from the other girl. She said that at night we were sleeping. Suddenly the sound of her roommate groaning woke me. Thinking she was dreaming, I went close and gave her a little push, and at once she gripped my throat. The moment I pushed her off onto the bed, she began to thrash, blood coming from her nose and mouth. I was very afraid and screamed.

The Roommate Who Would Not Be Pulled Off

In the morning the mess owner came back from the hospital with the girl and said there was nothing much wrong, then left. The girl looked completely well. Everything went on normally again. Then came another trouble. The girl who had been ill the night before was screaming today and saying, “Roommate, let me go!” We all ran and saw that the girl who had been well yesterday was now ill, and she was sitting on the chest of the girl who had been ill yesterday, gripping her throat. Even all of us together could not pull her off, she was so heavy. With great difficulty she was pulled off and laid on her own bed. After that she became senseless. When she regained her senses she said, “What happened? Why are you all here?” After these two incidents, one after another, to two girls, they left the mess the next morning without telling anyone. After that several more people came to that room and left the mess after one night.

The next day my roommate came. A good friendship grew between us quickly. At one point she said to me, “Have you been alone in this room all this time?” I said, “Yes.” She said, “My, you have a lot of courage, were you not afraid?” I said, “No.” I should say here that I was new to the mess, I knew nothing about it, and nobody had told me anything.

The Door That Bent Inward

One day at one in the night my roommate and I were chatting and singing loudly. Since the room next to mine was empty and our singing could not be heard from other rooms, that was why we sang. My roommate said, “Look, someone will come and scold us.” As she was saying it, there was a knock at the door. Since our beds were right next to the door, I thought of opening it and saying “sorry”. Suddenly I opened the door and saw nobody. I put the upper latch on and told my roommate that this had happened a few times before. My roommate got a little alarmed. Suddenly there was banging on the door, hard. My ears were ringing, someone was pounding on the door nonstop. I was about to open it when my roommate caught my hand and said, “Do not open the door.” As she said it, the lower part of the door began to bend a good way into the room. Seeing this, I ran in fear and clung to my roommate.

A demonic uproar began. It felt as if a cyclone, a tornado, a storm and an earthquake were all happening outside together, with kicks on the door. Oof, how terrifying! All the duas and durood we knew, the two of us recited loudly. Slowly the sound of blows on the door lessened. Then came kicks on another door, along with sounds of blows, and the thud of eight or ten people walking about.

What do you think, were we reciting duas out of fear of ghosts? Not at all. It had still not occurred to us that what was happening to us was supernatural. The two of us thought that perhaps thieves or robbers had come and would break the door and take us away. Perhaps many of you wonder why we thought this. Actually I told you at the start that on the fourth and fifth floors of this building only a roof had been put on, and thieves often came to the mess through there and stole all sorts of things. If caught they would leap from the fifth floor into the pond beside and swim away. We thought someone must have forgotten to lock the unit’s door, so a thief had come in and was breaking down the door.

We did not have the mess owner’s phone number, so we called a didi in the next room. We learned that she was in the same state of fear. She said, “I am alone, I will come to your room, open the door.” The two of us were so frightened that we said, we will not open the door tonight. Because the sounds were still going on. The didi was afraid of ghosts, and we of thieves. In her fear she began to have trouble breathing, and she called the mess owner to come. He came and began knocking on the door of the unit, but nobody opened. After a long time one older didi opened the door and asked, “What happened?” Then the mess owner came inside and woke everyone. We came out too and told everything. Hearing it, everyone looked at the three of us in astonishment, because nobody but the three of us had felt anything of what had happened all that time. And the door had been locked, so there was no question of a thief coming. Then what was it that had happened to us? A thousand questions circled in my mind.

I said, “All right. Then what was that about the door bending?” The mess owner said, “You dreamed in your sleep.” I said, “That is also all right, if one person had seen it that would have been fine, but how did three people dream the same dream together?” He said, “You are defaming my mess.” He scolded us in return and went away. The three of us could not sleep all night out of fear.

Lights Off and Doors Locked From Outside

In the morning the didis called a meeting. They said, “Nobody will turn off the light at night. And if anyone knocks on the door, first find out who it is, and only then open the door.” I asked, “Why?” She said, “Just so.” I understood that I was not the only victim of this trouble, everyone was, but nobody told anybody.

We all made a plan to sleep with the lights on. But after everyone fell asleep, the lights went off by themselves, and all the bathroom taps turned on together and water began to run. The sound of running water woke everyone. On waking, everyone found the light in their room off, and when they went to open the door, found that everyone’s door was locked from outside. What a terrible state! When the mess owner was phoned, he broke in and opened the door of every room. Now the question: what was all this? The mess owner still raised his voice and built up all sorts of scientific explanations about doors expanding and contracting.

The Senior Didi’s Story

Later I learned the real story from a senior didi of the mess. She said, “I had just moved into the mess then. I lived in one of the two rooms on one side, the room that everybody comes to and leaves. After I moved in I got a roommate, and we had a very good relationship. One night we were chatting with the window open. After quite a while, my eyes happened to go to the window and I saw a shadow. I live in a ground-floor room, and I thought, finding the window open at this hour, perhaps a thief had come and was standing there. Thinking this I shut the window and went to sleep. At about two or three in the night I suddenly woke, and saw the window open, and outside the window a pair of bloody, burning red eyes looking at me, coming through the window into the room toward me. I saw the shape of an animal, just like a wild boar. In fear I turned to stone. I could not call my roommate beside me, because I could neither move my hand nor make any sound. Even when I wanted to recite dua and kalam, for some time it felt as if I knew no dua or kalam at all.

Suddenly my roommate’s push brought me back to my senses. She said, ‘What happened to you? Why were you groaning with your eyes wide open, looking at the window?’ It felt as if life had returned to my body. I said, ‘Look, what is that outside the window?’ She looked and said, ‘Have you gone mad? What strange things are you saying? The window is shut, how can I see outside?’ I felt as if I had fallen from the sky, true, the window was shut, so what had I been seeing all this time? Thinking it was a trick of the mind, I fell asleep.

Although everything was fine all day, at night when the two of us were asleep, suddenly someone’s push woke me. I thought perhaps my roommate was calling me, and without opening my eyes I said, ‘What happened, why are you shaking me?’ But the push did not stop. This time when I turned and looked, I saw a pitch-black, long-haired hand, it felt like a gorilla’s hand, coming through the window and shaking my body. I should say here that my bed was far from the window, so for a human hand to be that long was impossible. Seeing this I screamed, and saw that my roommate was screaming too. Looking over, I saw there was not one but two hands, shaking both of us from two sides. Hearing our screams everyone came. When we opened the door and let everyone in, they switched on the room light and said, ‘What happened?’ We were about to speak about the window, and saw that the window was shut. What could we say now? I said, ‘You go,’ and closed the door. The two of us decided to go home the next day.”

What My Nana Found

After hearing the senior didi’s story, I come back to my own story. When I went home, my nana came to our house. My nana was a hujur (Islamic scholar), who did tadbir for all kinds of jinn and ghosts. I told him everything. He decided to come with me to my mess. The next day when he came to the mess with me, my nana did not enter my room, but went outside toward the window, that is, toward the jungle. After going all around the whole building for some time he came back and said to me, “Call your mess owner, my dear.” After I called the mess owner, my nana said to him, “My son, knowing everything about this place, you built these two rooms over graves and did not even hold a milad. That is why the girls who live in the rooms can even lose their lives. You know that there are very bad jinn here, who are always desperate to harm the girls. If you hold a milad, perhaps the problem can be solved.” The mess owner called all of this nonsense and made up, and left.

Then, for the protection of the girls, my nana sealed the building, made dua, and told me to hang a Quran Sharif in a bag from the window. I did all this as my nana said. I left that room and moved to a room on the opposite side. After that there was no more trouble. Hearing all this I was frightened, thinking what great harm had been written in my fate. And truly, after that too some more things happened to me. I never dared stay in that mess again. Later I left that mess and moved to a different one. After that nothing happened to me again.
